As long as the value of a pension does not exceed € 503.24 per year (amount for 2021), the pension is regarded a ‘klein pensioen’ (small-sized pension). If the employee’s current pension plan is terminated because (s)he is changing jobs, the current pension provider can transfer the accrued pension to the new pension provider (without intervention from the employee). The pension will then be transferred to a new pension plan. In any other situations besides changing jobs, this automatic pension transfer is not permitted. However, this can all change as a result of a new legislative proposal which has been published in concept from online at www.internetconsultatie.nl. The proposal should make it easier for pension providers to automatically transfer the accrued pension value and pension rights to a new pension provider for (almost) all small-sized pensions.
This easier transfer should also become an option when terminating a collective pension plan and changing to a new pension provider. In order to avoid a scenario in which employers must pay extra for the pension transfer, any pension plans taken out with an insurance company will not be regulated by the new legislative proposal. The planned date for implementation of the proposal is January 1, 2022.
